Simple Ideas for Making Your Home Appealing to Buyers

Once the holidays are over and the decorations are taken down, winter can start to feel a little gloomy.  Yards not covered in snow are brown and drab.  The cold weather and shortened amount of sun don’t really help make the outside of your home more appealing.  While many people sell their home over the holidays and into the winter months, there are some things that you can do to make your home appealing to buyers during the winter months.

Welcoming Front Porch

Even though the holidays are over, it doesn’t mean that your front door has to lack decoration.  Take the red bow off any evergreen plants to bring some color and attention to the front door to make your home appealing to buyers as they enter.  Add a wreath to your front door or include some lighting around your door using lanterns with battery operated candles to add warmth to your entrance.  Make sure that your porch lights are working. Place a sturdy mat in front of your door for buyers to brush off the mud and snow from their shoes before entering your home to help keep your home appealing to buyers who may visit later in the day.

Snow Patrol

Nothing can make a home appealing to buyers in the winter than a fresh coat of sparkling snow covering the front lawn. Unfortunately, snow just doesn’t fall on the grass. When you have showings scheduled make sure that the driveway and path to the front door are clear of snow.  This makes your home appealing to buyers by demonstrating that you are on top of the upkeep of your home.  It also makes it safer for them to get inside of your home when it is dark and ice is more difficult to see.

Put out a Coat Hook and Mat

One of the first things hosts say to their guests is “Take your coat off and stay awhile!”  Provide buyers with a place to hang their coats helps to encourage them to stay in your home longer.  If you don’t want people walking through your home with wet boots, then provide show covers or a mat where buyers can place their shoes.

Turn on the Lights

So your dad might cringe at this one, but to make your home appealing to buyers during the winter, turn on all the lights.  Not only does turning on all the lights make it easier for buyers to navigate the rooms inside your home where they are unfamiliar with the location of light switches, it also looks inviting from the outside too.

Turn up the Thermostat…a bit.

Making your home appealing to buyers does not just have to do with the appearance, but also the feel.  While many of us are keeping our homes cooler because of rising heating costs, before a showing, turn the thermostat up to sixty eight to seventy two degrees.  Having a comfortable temperature inside of your home helps buyers stay longer in it.

I feel like it also goes without saying that making your home appealing to buyers in the winter also means making sure that everything is clean.  No one will remember your beautiful fireplace or glass tile backsplash if all they see are dirty dishes on the counter.
