As we creep into the middle of winter, the short days and dreary weather can have us wishing for an escape. Even if it’s just for a day, taking a road trip can help lighten those winter blues. For Locust Grove locals, I’ve got a few suggestions for three winter road trip that are only a few hours away from Locust Grove.
Winter Road Trip 1: Virginia Beach
Yes, that’s right, the beach. While everyone equates the beach with sunshine and water fun, there is no rule that says you can’t enjoy it in the winter too. Virginia beach has a beautiful boardwalk that lets you take in the ocean views while keeping your feet out of the sand. You can also venture towards the water (please note I did not say in) to collect the shells that are harder to find in the summer with all the crowds of people. Wintertime is also the best time to take a whale watching boat tour as the creatures are along the coastline. Horseback riding along the shoreline is also available for selected dates in January.
If being on the open water isn’t for you, a winter road trip to the Virginia Aquarium is also a great way to spend the day.
Winter Road Trip 2: Wintergreen Resort
Just under two hours away and west of Charlottesville, Wintergreen Resort is a playground for anyone who loves skiing or snowboarding. With their own snow making system, it’s always a good time to try out the slopes. For a winter road trip for Locust Grove locals who don’t enjoy skiing, consider trying out their tubing hill. Sessions last for about an hour and then afterwards you can grab a meal at one of their restaurants as you warm up and observe the experts on the slopes.
Winter Road Trip 3: Massanutten Resort
If you are reminiscing about warm weather, then visit Massanutten Resort’s indoor water park. Filled with slides, lazy rivers, and hot tubs, the toasty eighty four degree temperature will quickly thaw your winter chills and entertain everyone in your family. Day pass tickets are available, so you can drive over from Locust Grove without having to stay the night at the resort.
Of course, Massanutten also offers skiing and snowboarding as well as lessons for beginners. There is also a spa for anyone who finds this the ultimate way to relax.
