Believe it or not there is a difference between searching for a carriage house and a carriage home. While the wording is strikingly similar, the terms, in real estate speak, refer to two different styles of buildings.
The idea of what a carriage home is has changed throughout the years. Traditionally, carriage houses were on a larger estate and used to house horses. They mimicked the design of the main house. Later, people began to use carriage houses as a way to run a business and also have a place to live. Some older carriage houses have been renovated into guest cottages. Newer built carriage houses typically have a garage on the lower level.
Carriage homes are single build family dwellings that are placed on a lot not much bigger than the home itself. They often share a wall with the adjoining home similar to a townhouse.
