Happy 2023! I have really enjoyed spending time with my family over the holidays! It is always refreshing to sit around the table sharing dinner or watch the littlest Jones excitedly opening a gift. I hope that you also found some enjoyment and relaxation.
I’m excited for 2023 and am looking forward to helping my clients buy and sell homes during the year. In doing some research, I see that home design trends are moving toward creating more warmth and interest in a room through the use of color and patterns. I’m curious to see if any of these 2023 home design trends that are predicted to be popular this year come up in our conversations as we tour homes or talk about home improvement projects.
Goodbye Minimalism, Hello Color
The gray on gray with minimal décor home design trends of the past few years are shifting towards rooms that welcome color and decoration into the space. Wallpaper is being used more in homes too in order to make a statement through bold patterns. Art deco, first popularized in the 1920’s, is also making a comeback this year through décor pieces as one of the popular home design trends of the year.
Moody Colors
Using dark, bold colors to create a moody feeling within a room is one of the home design trends for 2023 that can really make a statement. Deep greens, blues, and blacks are popular color choices and when balanced with the correct lighting can give a room a vibe without making the room feel small and like it is closing in on you. (Pro tip: Make sure to test out a dark color on a wall and look at it several times during the day before you commit to a certain shade because it can take a lot of coats of primer to cover up a mistake.)
Vintage and Upcycled Furniture and Décor
Instead of purchasing fast furniture pieces (a.k.a. ones that come in a box that you assemble), home owners are digging in Grandma’s attic and at yard sales to find pieces that can be repurposed or refinished for this home design trends. With the last few years of supply chain issues due to the pandemic, people are looking towards changing the finish on a table rather than purchasing a new one. Vintage pieces from family also add a special touch of meaning for a homeowner.
Curved not linear
The designs of a sofa, chair, or table are moving away from straight lines and into more curved versions with these home design trends. These pieces are more statement items in a room.
Lamps As Statements
While recessed lighting will always be appreciated for its ability to bring light into a space, using lighting fixtures as statement pieces within a room is one of the home design trends of the year. Whether it is a simple geometric table lamp next to a bed or an oversized pendant over the island, expect to see eye-catching pieces appear in homes.
Nature indoors
Plants, woven baskets, and earthenware all point to the home design trends of bringing nature inside your home. Plants can add texture and interest into a room as well as improve air quality. An appreciation for natural stones like granite, soapstone, and marble is also one of the 2023 home design trends taking shape.
Paint Colors
Deep greens, warm neutrals, and even earthy shades of pink are all colors selected by paint companies as home design trends for the upcoming year. These shades make your home warm and inviting and are a departure from the cooler gray shades that have been popular.
Are you planning on embracing any of these home design trends for 2023? Out of all of them, I think that the paint is the easiest to change up the feeling of a room. But, for now, I’ll stick with my already long home improvement list before adding anything new to it.
