Kitchens are one of the most important spaces in a home. Buyers who are searching for move-in ready homes are looking for functionality but also updates in this space. In the 2023 Houzz Kitchen Trends study, home owners who are have just finished or in the process of renovating the kitchen shared what their priorities were. Before you start renovating the kitchen in your home, take a look at the trends other homeowners are incorporating into their home.
Why are homeowners renovating the kitchen?
According to the study, the most popular reason for renovating the kitchen is because the home owners do not like the style. Other top reasons included kitchens that are not working or broken, homeowners having the availability of funds to make changes, and to improve the resale value of the home. There are some home improvement projects where you can make back the money you put into upgrading your home and the kitchen is one of them.
What are homeowners changing in the kitchen?
Countertops are the most popular upgrade when owners are renovating the kitchen according to the study. Following closely behind countertops include changes to the backsplash, sinks, faucets, and lighting.
For homeowners changing the layout of the kitchen, an L shape is the favored layout. U shaped kitchen layouts are the second most popular choice.
Four Kitchen Renovation Trends
Changes in Cabinet Styles
When switching out the cabinets, white shaker cabinets are still the go to option for homeowners. However, flat panel doors are increasing in popularity. Wood toned cabinets are starting to make a comeback too when renovating the kitchen. For cabinet pulls, the most popular choice is bars followed by knobs and cup pulls.
Creating a timeless space
Sustainability, whether it is LED lighting or high efficiency appliances, is something important to homeowners when renovating the kitchen. Likewise, making choices that create a timeless kitchen space that can’t be pinpointed to a certain trend (I’m talking to you avocado colored refrigerator) is also something that homeowners are embracing. If a kitchen is completely stylized to a certain trend, then the desire to remodel it again in a few years won’t be present. This is more sustainable and cost effective.
Recessed lighting vs under cabinet
While under cabinet lighting is still a favorite, recessed lighting in the kitchen saw a rise in popularity. Using pendant lighting over an island is also a popular choice, although this style saw a slight decline in the survey.
Incorporating Electronics
Upgrades like docking stations and wireless speakers are increasing in popularity among kitchen renovators. Having a space to charge all your phones and tablets in a drawer stashed out of sight definitely sounds appealing to me. Other electronic improvements like a touchless faucet are being installed into kitchens.
