One of our family’s favorite fall activities is picking apples. Taking a drive to an orchard and spending the morning exploring and finding just the right apples makes for a fun and relaxing Saturday. Since apples ripen over a few months we enjoy going to a few different places to try out all the varieties. If you have just moved to Locust Grove, VA, there are several amazing nearby spots to pick apples. Here are some of our favorites.
The Market at Grelen Located in Somerset, you can easily spend much of the day at this picturesque orchard (along with store, café, and hiking trails). If it’s your first time visiting, stop into the market for directions to the orchard, bring your own bag, and pick away. Their website frequently updates the types of apples available for picking and the cost. With about a thirty minute drive, this is a great spot for apple picking near Locust Grove.
Fruit Hill Orchard Found in Fluvanna County just south of Zion Crossroads, this orchard offers lots of outdoor fun. They provide apple picking sticks, share info on the types of apples available, and even have a little apple museum. When your kids need to run off some energy there are lots of fun games located in the rows of the orchard. They can try a relay race, bean bag toss, and more. There is also a farm store that offers lots of other great products. While a little further out, the experience is worth the drive.
Jenkins Orchards A drive through Culpeper and over to Woodville, Jenkins Orchards has delicious produce all year long. Their pick your own apple selection is awesome. Just note that Jenkins Orchards only accepts cash, no credit cards.
FT Valley Farm Just outside of the town of Sperryville, FT Valley Farm has beautiful views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. With a variety of apples to pick from August to late October, there are lots of choices here.
