Flavored shaved ice on a hot day will make anyone smile!
Nothing can make the littlest Jones more excited than seeing the words “Kona Ice Day” on the message board outside of her school. With squeals of excitement, she quickly dives into a conversation about what flavors she will get at Kona Ice Day. Though some of her combinations are questionable (why wouldn’t watermelon, tiger’s blood, and orange go together?), the excitement that she has over shaved ice is understandable. What is more refreshing on a warm day than a shaved ice treat?
What is Kona Ice?
You may have already spotted the Kona Ice Truck on the road in your travels through Locust Grove or Culpeper. The tropical blue beach themed van plays welcoming tropical music and is a frequent visitor to schools and community events. The Kona Ice of Culpeper, Locust Grove, and Warrenton is operated by Maria Lischak and Tania Terleckyj and travels around the area delivering sweet treats.
Whether it is a school, neighborhood, or community event, you can book Kona Ice to attend. A quick glance at their facebook page shows that Kona Ice is very involved in giving back to the community. Whether it is a fundraiser for youth sports, local schools or non-profit organizations, our local Kona Ice has given back $19,231 in 2022. Since first opening shortly before the pandemic, Kona Ice of Culpeper, Locust Grove, and Warrenton has given back almost $35,000! That is amazing!
What does Kona Ice sell and where do I find them?
Kona Ice sells….wait for it…shaved ice. You decide the size of cup you would like and then decide the flavor. They have lots of different flavors to select from including blue raspberry, ninja cherry, pina colada, and seasonal specialties as well. I can understand the littlest Jones’ desire to fill her cup with as many flavors as possible since it can be hard to select just one. Unlike the super sweet syrups that are traditionally associated with flavored shaved ices, Kona Ice offers flavors with less sugar and have added Vitamin C and D.
For individuals or families that have to avoid certain ingrediants because of allergies or food sensitivities, Kona Ice has an entire page detailing the ingredients in their products. Find it here.
To find where the Kona Ice truck is check on the facebook page. They keep it up to date with local community events that they will be attending and share where they are heading to next when there is more than one event in a day.
