We all dream of week-long summer vacations where our phones are silent, we don’t get any emergency texts, and the weather is perfect.  Sometimes, the most vacation time we get is a long weekend or a couple days off of work during the summer.  If you can relate, here are some road trip ideas for Locust Grove locals that will have you appreciating the beauty of summer even if it is just for a day or long weekend.

Cape Charles, Virginia

A three hour drive from Locust Grove with a trip across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, Cape Charles is a charming town on the Chesapeake Bay.  A beautiful family friendly beach on the Chesapeake has gentle waves at a public beach that are appealing to anyone who doesn’t like the stronger waves of the ocean. If you want to make a long weekend of it, there are bed and breakfasts and a newly renovated but highly rated Cape Motel in the area. (Is anyone else finding that staying at hotels, motels, or bed and breakfasts is becoming a much more economical choice over short term vacation rentals?) If you plan to stay overnight, make sure to book your room ahead of time as summer is a busy season.

The town of Cape Charles offers shopping in the form of quaint boutiques and locally run restaurants where you can spend a leisurely afternoon.  Nearby Kiptopeke State Park has five miles of hiking trails and beaches to explore.

Natural Bridge

Natural Bridge State Park is an easy two hour drive from Locust Grove.  One of the newest state parks in Virginia, this was once a privately owned property that has been transformed to a park so that everyone can enjoy the scenery, history, and nature in the area. A well maintained path takes you to this picturesque natural stone bridge.  With over seven miles of hiking trails there is more to see than just the bridge.  You can see the Lace Falls and go to the Monacan village.  There is a modest admission fee to enter the park.

Afterwards, stop by the Pink Cadillac Diner to grab some old school diner food.  From burgers to breakfast, they have something for everyone.  We stopped here a few years ago and enjoyed our meal!

If you’ve got any animal fans in your road trip clue, a trip to the Virginia Safari Park is a fun way to spend a few hours.  You can drive your car through the park to get an up close view of the animals and walk through areas to observe and feed animals.

Old Town Winchester

If you are interested in doing some window shopping and strolling at a leisurely pace, head up to Old Town Winchester.  A mix of unique boutiques, artisan shops, dining, and apparel Old Town Winchester offers something for everyone.

While in Winchester, country music fans can stop by Patsy Cline’s childhood home .   On your way home to Locust Grove, hop on scenic Route 522 and then 211.  You can stretch your legs for a bit at one of the awesome wineries on your route home to Locust Grove.  Narmada Winery and Gray Ghost Vineyards in Amissville both offer tastings in beautiful settings.
