Apple season is in full swing. I love the different varieties of the fruit that you can find; it makes me question my younger self’s obsession with red delicious. If you’ve done any apple picking lately or picked up a bunch from the store on sale, then you might end up with more apples than you can eat!  Apples are a favorite of the Jones house; we love them raw, baked, and turned into tasty breads and desserts!  Here are some of our favorite apple recipes!

Apple Crumble

One of our favorite cozy fall apple recipes that is perfect for dessert alone or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top, apple crumble is easy to put together from pantry staples. You can adjust the spices according to what your family likes too! We omit nutmeg because we aren’t fans, but if you like it, add it in! Instead of cooking in a pan, sometimes we make this dish in individual ramekins like these.   They cook a little faster, but it’s nice to have individual servings ready to go!

Ingredients

For the crumble:

1 ½ cups of all purpose flour

1 ½ cups of brown sugar, divided

1 ½ sticks of butter

1 cup old fashioned oats

¾ teaspoon of salt

For the apple mixture:

3-4 pounds of granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and cut into ½ inch pieces.

*You can mix in other tangy or tart apples into this mix.  We find that softer apples like red delicious don’t work well here.

1 ½ tablespoons of cinnamon

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.  Grease a 9 x 13 pan.

2.  In a bowl, mix together the flour, 1 cup of brown sugar, oats, and salt.  Then, cut butter into smaller cubes and use a fork or pastry cutter  to combine the butter with the flour mixture.  Continue to combine until the mixture is like crumbs.

3.  Add cut apples to the pan and toss with cinnamon and ½ cup of brown sugar and spread evenly in the pan.

4 Top with crumble mixture.

5.  Bake in the oven for about one hour until the apples are cooked through.  Let cool for a few minutes and then serve.

Cinnamon Apple Swirl Bread

This amazing bread is easy to make and another one of our favorite apple recipes.  We usually double this apple recipes, so we have a loaf to put in the freezer for another day.  This recipe is from Once Upon a Chef.  You can get it here.

Apple Cider

Need an easy way to use up some apples?  Try making your own apple cider at home!  With a slow cooker doing most of the work, this apple recipe is easy and yields delicious results!

Ingredients:

10 large apples washed and quartered (You don’t have to peel or core!)

¼ cup white sugar

¼ cup brown sugar

3 cinnamon sticks

½ tsp cloves (whole)

½ tsp allspice

Water

Directions:

1 Put cut apples into a slow cooker with sugar, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.

2. Add water until it’s about two inches over the apples.

3.  Turn the slow cooker on high and cook for about four hours.

4. After four hours, use a heavy spoon or masher or smash apples.  Then continue to cook cider for an additional four hours.

5. Use a large strainer to strain the cider into a pitcher.  You can strain an additional time if desired.  Taste and add additional sugar if necessary. (The sweetness can vary depending on the types of apples used.)

6.  Serve warm.

The cider keeps in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator for a week.  You can also freeze it to enjoy it later!
