There is something so refreshing about taking a day trip.  It breaks up the everyday routine, but it still keeps you close to home.  Luckily there are many things to do in central Virginia. Here are three fall day trips from your home in Locust Grove; these are several fun easy day trips in the area to refresh your spirit and have some fun.

Lurary, Virginia: Day Trip 1 from your home in Locust Grove

Luray, Virginia  Luray is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley just off of Route 211 just less than an hour and a half from Locust Grove.  The drive here through the Blue Ridge Mountains is picturesque especially in the fall.  Once in town, you can wander through downtown Luray and explore the stores.  If you collect vinyl, then you must stop by Switz-Mix Records to browse through their well organized collections.  You could probably spend most of the day here searching through all the genres because whether you like rock, country, jazz, classical, or the obscure you can find it here.  There are plenty of restaurants in town, but our favorite is Il Vesuvio Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria. It is small and unassuming from the outside but the food is awesome. The pizza is delicious and the garlic knots are amazing. You can also visit Luray Caverns to tour the largest caverns in the Eastern US and be home in time for bed. (Although not in Luray, another awesome cavern to explore is Grand Caverns. It would make another great day trip from your home in Locust Grove.)

Shenandoah National Park: Day Trip 2 from your home in Locust Grove

This park is beautiful at any time of the year, but it is especially alluring during the fall when the leaves are changing colors.  Even if hiking isn’t your cup of tea, Locust Grove locals can enter the park at either the Thornton Gap or Swift Run Entrance and travel on Skyline Drive.  You can stop at the many overlooks to appreciate the views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley.   Enjoy a meal at Skyland or grab some sandwiches and picnic near Big Meadows.  There are many hikes throughout the park that range in difficulty.  You can take a stroll on the Limberlost Trail for easy hiking or try out Dark Hollow Falls for challenge.  There are ranger programs scheduled throughout the day to give you a more in depth understanding of the park and wildlife that call it home. You can’t see everything here in a day or even two, but thankfully Shenandoah is some close to our home in Locust Grove that a trip back is easy.

Williamsburg: Day Trip 3 from your home in Locust Grove

For those with a home in Locust Grove, a trip to Williamsburg is only two hours away.  While you can purchase tickets to explore the insides of the buildings at Colonial Williamsburg, it is also just fun to stroll up and down the street there and observe all the colonial actors during the day.  Nearby Merchant’s Square  is home to many unique boutique stores.  Our favorite place to stop for a treat here is Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop; they have some delicious truffles. If you are searching for a little more adventure, then nearby Busch Gardens Williamsburg is worth a trip.  With roller coasters and shows, there is something for everyone.  Our family especially enjoys Christmas Town; happening from November through January, the entire park is covered in lights, there are holiday shows, Santa, and rides. While we have stayed overnight to enjoy a couple days in the park, from our home in Locust Grove this can be a one day trip.
