Cape cods are a style of home popular on the east coast known for their charming curb appeal and cozy interiors. While they aren’t as numerous as colonials or ranches in our area of Virginia, you can still find them. Whether it’s an older home or newly built, a cape cod is a type of home that people continue to embrace.
Features of a Cape Cod
Cape cods are recognized by their steep roofs and shingled exterior. Unlike ornate Victorians, cape cods have simple decorative elements and are symmetrical. Traditionally, a fireplace in the center of the home is marked by a chimney on the exterior. Found on the east coast near the Atlantic Ocean, today cape cods are built throughout the country.
Modern cape cods have one or two levels. Usually the primary bedroom is on the main floor, so this makes this home perfect for people searching for one level living, but occasionally need additional bedrooms for guests. The upper level has many angles created by the dormers and steep roof line. While traditional ones do not have basements, modern cape cods are built with basements.
