If you’ve ever looked at a home listing and seen it described as contemporary, but were then confused to see farmhouse décor inside, then you are not alone. Contemporary is a home style that is ever evolving and blends elements from current popular home trends to reflect what is popular today. Even though what is considered contemporary today may be different than twenty years ago, there are some similarities that thread the idea of contemporary homes together across the decades.
Originating in the 1970s, contemporary homes took what was popular at the time, modern, post-modern, and art deco, and melded elements together into a new look. While contemporary changes over time, there are some things that stay true to the style.
Interior Contemporary homes have
- room décor is simple and uncluttered
- clean lines
- incorporate metal and glass
- use wood elements from beams to furniture
- contrasting color palette of black, white, and neutrals
- open floor plan
- minimal window treatments
- texture is brought into the space through fabrics and plants

- an asymmetrical facade
- large windows
- mix of materials like stone and wood
Mid-century modern and contemporary homes are sometimes confused. While contemporary homes borrow many elements, like clean lines and geometric shapes, from the mid-century modern style there still are difference between the two. Rooms in contemporary homes will often be minimalistic to draw attention to one art or furniture piece in the room while mid-century modern focus on incorporating design elements from the 1950’s. Mid-century modern homes utilize earth tones in paint colors while contemporary homes rely on white, black, and neutral colors.
