Have you heard of the 1,000 Hours Outside challenge? It’s a movement meant to encourage families to spend more time outside than on screens. The goal is to complete one thousand hours in a year. While the weather and work sometimes does not cooperate with us, one way to grab a few more hours outside is a picnic. Whether it’s lunch or dinner, here are some of the best places for a picnic near Locust Grove.  Theses are some of our family’s favorite spots.

Rockwater Park  Located in Culpeper, Rockwater Park is the perfect place to spend an afternoon.  Rockwater Park has a playground, walking trail, disc golf course, and splash pad.  There is a pavilion with picnic tables or you can bring a blanket and claim a spot on the ground.  It also has a bathroom. (Always a win for the kid who didn’t have to go at home, but always has to once you’ve pulled into an outdoor play space.)  On really hot summer days, this park gets crowded in the afternoon, so an early lunch followed by playing in the splash pad is ideal.

Lake of the Woods  If you are a resident of Lake of the Woods or have a friend that lives there, Lake of the Woods is an awesome spot for a picnic.  Lake of the Woods has many parks spread throughout the community with picnic tables, pavilions, and playgrounds.

Lenn Park  Not far from Locust Grove, this Culpeper Park is a great spot for a picnic. Lenn Park has lots of picnic tables, playgrounds, sport fields, and a dog park. You can also walk a trail along the stream where people fish.

Of course, if all else fails, sometimes one of the best places for a picnic near Locust Grove is your backyard. Do you have any favorite spots? Let me know in the comments!
